On Monday 7th December, twenty student activists from the University of York decided to clean up the local Shell garage, on behalf of everyone living in the Niger Delta. Shell are experts at creating a mess: in the Niger Delta, pollution and environmental damage caused by Shell has resulted in violations of the rights to health and a healthy environment, the right to an adequate standard of living (including the right to food and water) and the right to gain a living through work, violations that affect hundreds of thousands of people. The activists - all kitted out with brushes and overalls - gave Shell's customers, and staff, a bit of shock with their very early Spring Clean.
